Eh, Malaysia, I would like to lodge a complaint.
Well, well, well if its not you again.
Yeah, okay it’s me again. Just hear me out this one time.
So tonight, my parents decided to take me out for supper, showing me the new places to eat in town, the new Indian restaurant with the killer tosai, that new restaurant that I should never try cos it’s no good and PappaRich. And as I was sitting in this fancy cozy restaurant by this peculiar name that sounds like an Italian pizza place to me, i.e: Papa Del’s, Papa Joe’s, Papa John’s, Papa Mia’s, it got me thinking and that has led me to this very moment where I am lodging a legit complaint.
Malaysians love PappaRich man. Why spoil it for everyone?
So, as I was browsing the glossy colorful menu while noticing the young crowd surrounding me with their laptops on the table, I can’t help but to be reminded off… the Starbucks back on campus. With the AC on full speed, free wifi, comfy tables and chairs, people talking in whispers, young lads and lasses in their fashionable clothes, over-priced local food, this is nowhere near a traditional warung environment. So I decided to make a list of things that I wasn’t very happy about and tried to be rational about it, putting myself in their shoes kinda thing. Here goes nothing!
1. If I wanted an over priced mee laksa, I should’ve stayed back in the States!
- You’re paying for the cozy environment too. The free wifi, the breezy AC, the comfy tables and chairs don’t come free yo!
2. What happened to being unique? What happened to every state has its own special food? Now everywhere I go, there’s PappaRich. They all taste the same! I want my variety of food! When you have satay kajang in Ipoh for example, it is not the same as having it in Kajang itself. I am a Malaysian and I demand to be treated as a Malaysian, that is with a blend of taste in my mouth and a right to brag about how the food in my state is better than in your state. I want my kids to be spoiled for choice when it comes to food!
- Have you learned nothing in your econ classes.. Fresh grads… Chain businesses are the way to go! Build a branch name and make tons of money. How is Malaysia’s income ever gonna grow if every entrepreneurs stick with a warung? This could go international if we can keep up the quality of service.
3. There’s no more interaction. Order pun tulis sendiri. Everyone’s whispering like we’re all fancy and stuff. What happened to just calling the bos to take my order?
- Kau memang tak guna. Itu pun nak marah. They’re not acting fancy. They’re just being respectful of others. There’s people bringing work to the table (kan ada free wifi), it’s a very family friendly place, so what’s wrong with speaking with a little bit of manners? Plus, the workers can serve you faster if you write your own orders. People can be fickle sometimes and time is money.
So I managed to rationalize everything that was sorta bothering me except for one thing. As I was walking out of the restaurant, Justin Timberlake’s Cry me a River just finished playing and there was a pause before a new beat came up. Guess what it was…
KATY PERRY ft. KANYE WEST’S ET. DUDE, I LEFT THE STATES BECAUSE OF THAT SONG. OKAY NOT REALLY, BUT I WAS HAPPY THINKING THAT THIS ANNOYING SONG WONT BE PLAYED AS OFTEN. WHAT THE WHAT MAN! Kalau ye pun tanak that warung mentality dah, you could at least put on a more appropriate song. They played American songs the whole two hours I was there. So I nak complain.
Harap komplen diatas diambil notis.
PS: ET’s fans, I hope you could see the bigger picture and not take this post to heart (the wrong way that is)
